Windows Phone 8.1 Tips and Tricks

If you're using any Windows Phone 8-based handset, you can get the final shipping version of Windows Phone 8.1 for free. Here's what you need to know.

Windows Phone 8.1 Tips and Tricks

System

Manage Notifications

Windows Phone 8.1 dramatically improves how Microsoft's smart phone platform deals with notifications from the OS and from apps. Now, in addition to live tile updates and banner notifications, the system includes a new notification manager called Action Center. It is arguably the single best new feature in Windows Phone 8.1.

Manage App Updates

One of the best new features in Windows Phone 8.1 is that the OS, finally, downloads and installs new app updates automatically. This behavior is probably optimal for most users, and you can see which apps have been updated at any time. But you can also configure this behavior in various ways and even disable it if needed.

Master Social Networking Integration

A beta version of Twitter for Windows Phone 8.1 leaked this week, providing an answer to some questions I was just going to pose about social networking integration in Windows Phone. With this release, we can see a version of Twitter that works like the Facebook app for Windows Phone 8.1, one that integrates deeply with the system in a now-consistent way. And that's a good thing.

Sync Settings with Your PCs and Tablets

As Windows Phone gets closer to the PC- and tablet-based Windows OSes, we're starting to see some neat integration bits. Key among those are the new settings sync features in Windows Phone 8.1, which let you sync key settings between your handset and your Windows 8.1-based PCs and tablets.

Master the New Custom Volume Settings

Among the many seemingly small but very useful changes in Windows Phone 8.1 is a rethinking of the ways in which you can interact with the various sounds that come out of your handset. Now, instead of a global volume control, Windows Phone 8.1 supports separate, custom volume settings for the ringer and notifications and for apps and media.

Master Airplane Mode

Airplane mode seems simple enough: Simply toggle this feature when you're on an airplane or other offline situation, shutting down all of the device's radios and saving battery life. But in Windows Phone, Airplane mode is a bit more nuanced, and in Windows Phone 8.1, in particular, it's far more accessible too.

Master Storage

Windows Phone 8.1 includes an improved Storage Sense utility that lets you easily track how much of your handset's storage is used and by what. But now you can also use this utility to uninstall apps, move apps between built-in and microSD storage, and determine which items are stored on microSD by default. It's a much more complete solution than what was available in previous Windows Phone versions.

Manage the Navigation Bar

If you're using a new Windows Phone 8.1 handset with Back, Start and Search "soft buttons," you can configure how they appear in the software-based navigation bar onscreen. This navigation bar can be colored to match the background or accent color, or can always be black to match the handset's front panel.

Cortana + Search

Pin Cortana to Your Start Screen

I've been holding off on discussing Cortana too much before I learn the ins and outs of this incredible new feature in Windows Phone 8.1, but here's one tip that will benefit even the Cortana newbie: You should pin Cortana to your Start screen because it behaves differently when you do so.

Find Missing Bing Search Features

While most people who have upgraded to Windows Phone 8.1 (in the United States at least) seem to be enjoying the new Cortana virtual digital assistant, some miss the secondary search features—like Local Scout, Bing Music and Bing Vision—that used to be available from the Bing Search interface in previous Windows Phone versions. No worries, as each of these features is still available in Windows Phone 8.1.

Start

Show More Tiles

If you're upgrading to Windows Phone 8.1 on your current handset, there's one new feature you'll want to seriously consider: The ability to show more tiles on the Start screen. Previously available only on those devices with a 1080p "Full HD" screen, this denser, more usable Start screen layout is now available on all handsets that can run Windows Phone 8.1, from the affordable Lumia 520 to the flagship Lumia 1020.

Use a Start Background

Depending on your design sense and Start screen tile layout, one new Windows Phone 8.1 feature may really grab you: The ability to use a photo or other image as a Start screen background. Oddly, this feature doesn't work as it does in Windows: With Windows Phone, the background comes through on the tiles, not on the space between. And the effect can be quite interesting.

Pin the Sense Apps to Start

Windows Phone 8.1 includes a new and improved collection of "Sense" apps, utilities that take the guesswork out of using your smart phone. These include Battery Saver, Data Sense, Storage Sense and Wi-Fi Sense. And the first four of those can now be pinned to your Start screen for quick access and live updates.

Internet Explorer 11

Master IE 11 Navigation

As a major new part of the Windows Phone 8.1 upgrade, Internet Explorer 11 isn't just numbered to appear similar to its tablet-based sibling in Windows 8.1. No, this is the real IE 11, with the same InPrivate browsing, Reading View, settings sync, and improved standards support you've come to expect on your other devices. But the similarities don't stop there: You can now navigate the web using many of the same techniques you use on a tablet.

Use Reading View in IE 11

Windows Phone 8.1's new web browser has a number of interesting features, including some that will be familiar to those who use Internet Explorer 11 in Windows 8.1. One of my favorites is Reading View, which makes an average web article or blog post much easier to read.

Pin Web Pages to Start

With the move to Internet Explorer 11, Microsoft has dramatically improved the capabilities of its web browser in the Windows Phone 8.1 upgrade. Key among them is the ability to pin a web site to Start as a live tile.

Maps

Windows Phone 8.1 Tip: Configure a Voice Navigation App

Windows Phone 8.1 ships with a basic Maps app, which provides location and direction information, as well as a neighborhood guide called Local Scout. What's missing, of course, is voice guided turn-by-turn navigation. But thanks to an integration model, these facilities can be provided by a third party app that you can get from your handset maker, your wireless carrier, or the Store. Here's how to configure a navigation app, and access it from Maps.

More

Use USB Screen Projection

One of the more eagerly awaited new features in Windows Phone 8.1 is the ability to project the handset to display to a secondary screen via wireless Miracast or wired USB technologies. This feature works much like screen projection in Windows 8.1, and is useful for those that need to show their Windows Phone handset to others in real time.

Take a Screenshot

Microsoft added the ability to take a Windows Phone screenshot in Windows Phone 8, and it's worked consistently ever since. But with Windows Phone moving towards a more integrated platform with Windows, the way you take a screenshot has now changed in Windows Phone 8.1. Why? To make it more consistent with Windows 8.1, of course.

Write your own apps

Get Started with Windows Phone 8.1 App Development

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 teaser video released

Samsung has released a new teaser video for the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, ahead of its launch next week.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 teaser

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is scheduled to launch at a special Samsung Unpacked 2014 Episode 2 event on September 3.

The latest teaser trailer from Samsung Mobile (via YouTube) states that the company’s new sell for its stylus wielding handset is its versatility.

“Ready, Set, Go is the new magic for the Next Note. Are you ready to Note?” asks Samsung in the YouTube trailer blurb.

Although the trailer doesn’t give us a look at the handset itself, it does suggest it will keep a very similar form factor to the previous Samsung Galaxy Note 3.

Rattling through the video, Samsung does suggest that the Note 4, like all other smartphones, will be quite the multitasker. Apparently it’ll be ready to “share”, “win”, “write” and “create” with come its release.

What’s interesting is that Samsung particularly highlights the phase “Go Big”. The Note 4 is expected to feature a huge 5.7-inch QHD 2560 x 1440p display, which no doubt will be one of its biggest selling points.

The other aspect stressed in the video is its ability to capture your smiles. This may well be related to rumours the Note 4 will come with an enhanced 3.7-megapixel front-facing camera for those who love taking selfies. It will allegedly be able to record QHD 2560 x 1440p resolution video too

Rumour has it that the Galaxy Note 4 will come with a 16-megapixel primary camera with optical image stabilisation.

Apparently it will be able to take pictures at a maximum 5312 x 2988p resolution and shoot 4K (3840 x 2160p) video at 30fps just like the Samsung Galaxy S5.

Samsung Galaxy Mega 2 goes on sale before it's even announced

We were expecting Samsung to announce the Galaxy Mega 2 soon, possibly even at IFA 2014, but it hardly need bother now as the phone has already gone on sale in certain shops in Thailand and Malaysia.

Samsung Galaxy Mega 2

Thai website Droid Sans picked one up and spilled all the beans on what we can expect. The Galaxy Mega 2 has a 6.0-inch, 720 x 1280 Super AMOLED display, which size wise puts it between the two versions of the original Samsung Galaxy Mega, which came in 5.8-inch and 6.3-inch flavours.

It's every bit as mid-range as its predecessor, with a 1.4GHz quad-core Exynos 4415 processor and 1.5GB of RAM. There's a 2800mAh battery and the Thai version comes with an 8MP camera, though apparently the upcoming Chinese version might get boosted to 13MP.

4G phablet

The Mega 2 supports 4G and NFC, runs Android 4.4.4 KitKat and there's 16GB of built in storage along with a microSD card slot.

The actual design of the Galaxy Mega 2 shares more in common with the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 than the original Galaxy Mega, as it has a faux-leather back. Droid Sans finishes by revealing that the handset sells for 14,500 Baht (around £280, $450, AU$485).

As for when it will be available, that's still unknown, hopefully we'll find out when Samsung announces it, as pointless as that now seems.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 wallpaper leaks, teases QHD display

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 wallpaper has leaked online, with the downloadable graphic seemingly confirmed the move to a QHD display.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 wallpaper

With a mass of recent Note 4 rumours having all suggested the upcoming phone will copy the LG G3 and adopt a QHD panel, the newly leaked wallpaper has touched down with a 2560 x 2560 pixel resolution.

This should be more than suitable for the phone’s expected 5.7-inch 2560 x1440 pixel resolution.

Echoing the ‘contemporary art’ themes of the Galaxy S5, the claimed Galaxy Note 4 wallpaper has surfaced courtesy of serial tipster SamMobile. The full-res image can be downloaded here.

The image fits with the wallpaper shown on recent leaks of the currently unconfirmed handset.

Eye-popping screen aside, the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is widely expected to play host to a mass of high-end internals.

A quad-core Snapdragon 805 processor has been tipped to run the show alongside a whopping 4GB of RAM. With a 16-megapixel primary camera expected to benefit from optical image stabilisation, the Note 4 will likely land with a Galaxy Alpha mimicking metal framed design.

One of the most eagerly awaited devices of the year, the Galaxy Note 4 will be formally unveiled during Samsung’s IFA 2014 press conference on September 3.

We will be on hand at the show to bring you all the latest on the Note 4.

HTC Nexus X tablet leaks with 64-bit Tegra K1 processor

Claimed HTC Nexus X benchmarks have surfaced, with the heavily rumoured tablet tipped to run a 64-bit Tegra K1 processor.

Google Nexus 7

Expected to launch later this year, the Nexus X is being tipped as a HTC-manufactured follow-on to the hugely popular Nexus 7 tablet line.

With the tablet widely expected to adopt an 8.9-inch display with a 2560 x 1600 pixel resolution, the Nexus X has now popped up on a CPU-Z benchmark report. Teased by TKTech, the leak has shown that Google will overlook the might of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chipset in favour of the hugely powerful Tegra K1 chip.

Doing the rounds under the codename ‘Denver’, the Tegra K1 chipset has been clocked at 2.5GHz and features 192-Core Kepler GPU architecture.

Yet to feature in any consumer available devices, Tegra has claimed that the K1 is 1.5 times more energy efficient than rival chipsets. With battery drain one of the main concerns for mobile devices, this could be a major boon for the new Nexus.

With the Nexus X now looking likely to become the first device to run the Tegra K1 SoC, the tablet is also expected to help debut the new, recently showcased, Android L OS.

Although Google has yet to offer any official word on the device, it is expected that the tablet will be formally unveiled in October.

The tablet could launch within weeks of the upcoming iPad Air 2 and new iPad mini, as well as touching down within the same window as the next Google phone, the Nexus 6.

New iOS ads ready to take over your screen

Apple may be making phones with larger screens, but it's also going to fill those screens with larger adverts.

iAd

The company has announced two new advert formats for iOS developers. One is full-screen interstitial banner ads (as predicted in March), while the other is pre-roll videos.

As Apple puts it on a note to its developers, "Now you can deliver highly engaging ads from leading brands. Optimized for your app, pre-roll video and full-screen interstitial banner ads are now available on iOS."

Apple's iAd platform has supported full-screen ads up to now, but users had to tap a banner to access them, or to reach a set break in a game or application. This will be the first time these ads can take over your screen without such prompting or restrictions.

As for the pre-roll videos, they can run in either 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratios for 15, 30, or 60 seconds. They also required iOS 7 to operate.

While these new ads won't be doing anything that rival ad platforms haven't been doing for some time now, they do mark a move into slightly more intrusive advertising that Apple has thus far resisted. It's not particularly good news for iPhone and iPad users.

Developers can start applying these two new ad types in their iPhone and iPad apps now.

As part of these announcements, Apple has also revealed that iAd has expanded to two new regions - Switzerland and Russia. This brings the total number of supported regions to 16.

HTC Desire 510 affordable 64-bit 4G phone announced

HTC has taken the wraps off the HTC Desire 510, its most affordable 4G phone yet.

HTC Desire 510

The HTC Desire 510 comes with a 4.7-inch display, which will soon be all the rage in the high-end smartphone market (thanks to the iPhone 6), and an 854 x 480 resolution that definitely won't be.

While the Desire 510 is powered by a seemingly low-end 1.2GHz Snapdragon 410 quad-core processor, this is actually Qualcomm's first 64-bit chip. In other words, it might not ever be the fastest CPU on the market, but it's one of the more future proof.

Elsewhere the HTC Desire 510 has 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage, and a microSD slot for expansion purposes. Around back there's a 5-megapixel camera, while your selfie/video call (delete according to age) needs are taken care of by a 0.3-megapixel camera.

It's a fairly chunky phone for the specs, with a 9.99mm-thick polycarbonate body that weighs in at 158g.

There's a 2,100mAh battery on board, and the Desire 510 will ship with Android 4.4 KitKat and HTC's Sense 6 UI. As noted, it will also support 4G LTE networks for super-fast data speeds.

"The industry has been talking about the 4G effect for so long now that it’s easy to forget that only a small selection of top-end devices are taking advantage of the technology," says HTC CEO Peter Chou. The HTC Desire 510 is designed to offer the benefits of 4G to those with lower budgets.

The HTC Desire 510 will be available in two colours: Terra White and Meridian Grey, and it'll also come with its own HTC Dot View case. There's no news on pricing or release date as yet, but HTC has confirmed that it's coming to Europe, Asia, and the US.

It's recently been rumoured that HTC could have another 64-bit Desire phone on display at IFA 2014 next week. The HTC Desire 820, as it's being dubbed, should provide slightly higher specs than the Desire 510 for a mid-range price tag.

You'll be able to pick up the 80 Cesium Tablet from October, and again we're still awaiting the full spec list.

Android army

Archos is just sticking with one operating system, spreading itself equally across two with the introduction of the 50b Platinum smartphone and 101 Oxygen tablet.

The Archos 50b Platinum release date is set for September, and a price tag of £119 SIM-free makes it another budget offering, with a 5-inch display, quad-core processor, 8MP rear camera, 2MP front camera, microSD slot and Android 4.4 KitKat.

Meanwhile the Archos 101 Oxygen release date is pegged for October, and the 10.1-inch full HD tablet has a price tag of £199.
